Maddie Steel Case Study
Maddie Steel (17) is studying A-level Physics at Career 6, alongside Level 3 BTEC in Mechanical Engineering.
“I wanted to join the RAF initially but didn’t think I could pass the fitness test, so decided to get an apprenticeship instead.
Next year, I’ll be starting a Mechanical and Electrical Engineering apprenticeship at Knauf, which I got through Humberside Engineering Training Association Ltd (Heta).
I applied two years ago and didn’t get in so decided to come here to gain some extra qualifications and experience, and this time I was successful.
Studying here has given me the additional knowledge I needed to take on the aptitude test, the meet and greet and the interview that was part of the process.
I have been to BAE Systems to do work experience which helped. The fact I’m doing a two year course in one year also shows commitment.
I’d love to follow in the footsteps of my grandads, who were both engineers. One lived in the Solomon Islands and designed the reader for the Sea King helicopter, which really inspired me.
I’m hoping initially to stay at Knauf for a while, then maybe join the RAF as a Mechanical Engineer Officer.
I’ve enjoyed my time at college and the staff have really helped me, particularly with getting me work experience at Humberside Airport.”
